My mom needs a knee replacement next year. Until then, she has to keep walking on the knee she has, and this is the brace that gets her through it. Her doctor recommended the Breg Freestyle OA for her injury and the condition of her knee, and she bought it.
So this is her review, not mine. I held the camera, the same way I did when I tested a gas leak detector with my dad, while she showed me how it goes on and told me what a year of wearing it has been like.
Quick Verdict
- Buy it if: your doctor wants you in an unloader brace for arthritis on one side of the knee and you’ve got to keep walking
- Skip it if: you want a soft sleeve you can pull on in a few seconds. This one has straps, a hinge, and a dial.
- My favorite feature: In her words, “once I got it on, it really helps my walking.”
- Would I buy again? Yes. She highly recommends it.
A dial that sets how hard it pushes on the knee
A plain knee sleeve squeezes the whole joint. An unloader brace like this one shifts pressure off the side of the knee that hurts. The hinge sits on the opposite side, outside for inner knee pain and inside for outer knee pain.
The red thumbwheel on the hinge sets how much it pushes, and no tools are needed. My mom put it this way: if you need your bone actually pushed in for your situation, the tension does that. She thinks hers goes from 1 up to 8 or 9, and she can change it any time.

Breg Freestyle OA Unloader Knee Brace
A single-upright unloader brace for osteoarthritis on one side of the knee, with a wraparound fit and a tool-free thumbwheel dial. The exact one my mom bought is out of stock, so the button goes to the same brace from Brace Direct.

Who is the Breg Freestyle OA for?
Someone like my mom: arthritis or an injury in one part of the knee, a doctor already in the picture, and a lot of walking left to do before surgery. She didn’t pick this off a shelf. She chose it with her doctor for her specific knee.
The brace isn’t her only help. She also uses a rollator that flips into a transport chair for when she’s tired. The brace is what keeps her on her feet the rest of the time.
How does it hold up after a year of daily wear?
My mom has had this brace for over a year, and she wears it every day, all day. She doesn’t walk well, and she’d tell you that herself, but she says it really helps her walking.
It has been through a lot. Her word for how it looks now is “raggedy,” and the follow-up was “after a year of wearing it every day all day, I mean, it works.” It still feels good on her, and she thinks it has started forming to the shape of her leg, which makes it even more comfortable.
Small details that make it easier to put on
- Numbered straps: the numbers guide you, so you’re not guessing which strap goes where.
- A tag that tells you how it goes on: hers reads Top, Left Leg, Medial OA, and Front.
- Open front: the kneecap sits in a cutout instead of under fabric.
What she likes most
- The fit. Her words: “The fit is very good.”
- Her overall take: “I highly recommend this.”

Before you order a Breg unloader brace
- Size and side matter. Each version is one leg, one side of the knee, and one size, and they’re sold as separate listings. Measure your thigh and calf, then check that the leg, the side, and the size all match you before you buy. If you’re not sure whether you need medial or lateral, that’s a question for your doctor.
- Putting it on takes practice. With her first one, it took my mom a little getting used to before she could get it on with the right fit.
- Fitting help is free. Brace Direct offers a free video session with a fitting professional to get the fit and the adjustment right.
Breg Freestyle OA questions
What is the Breg Freestyle OA knee brace for?
Osteoarthritis on one side of the knee. It’s an unloader brace that takes pressure off the painful side, and it’s also made for knee instability and a torn meniscus.
How do you adjust the Breg Freestyle OA?
With the thumbwheel dial on the hinge. Turning it changes how much pressure the brace puts on the knee.
Should I get the medial or lateral Breg Freestyle OA?
Medial is for pain on the inner side of the knee and lateral is for the outer side. Ask your doctor which one your knee needs.
How do I measure for the Breg Freestyle OA?
Measure around your thigh 6 inches above the kneecap and around your calf 6 inches below it, then match both numbers to the size chart.
Can you wear the Breg Freestyle OA all day?
My mom does, every day. It’s built to fit under clothes and breathe for all-day wear.
