The flame effect is what I love. I was looking for solar post cap lights because I didn’t want to run wire to my deck fence posts, and most of what I found looked cheap or just blinked on and off. These actually flicker in a way that looks warm and convincing from a distance.
Fuligent sent these to me to try. I’ve since added their solar spotlights by the deck steps too. In the first video I hadn’t installed them yet and just set them on the deck to show how they look. Since filming I’ve screwed them into my fence posts and they have been turning on every night automatically without me touching them once.
Quick Verdict
- Buy it if: you want a warm decorative glow on your deck or fence posts without running a single wire
- Skip it if: you need actual illumination for walking paths or security lighting, these are decorative only
- My favorite feature: the flame effect looks warm and convincing from a distance at night, and they have been running automatically every single night without me doing anything
- Would I buy again? Yes
What Makes These Solar Post Cap Lights Stand Out
Most solar lights I looked at either blinked on and off like a single LED or had a blue-white glow that killed any ambiance. The Fuligent lights flicker in a way that actually varies in speed and intensity, which is what makes the flame effect look decent rather than mechanical. Up close in daylight you can clearly see the LED, but at night from across the deck it reads as a warm glow on each post. They sit on top of the post so they become part of the structure, and the black housing looks clean during the day rather than plastic-y. You can screw them into fence posts or just set them anywhere you want a little light.

Who Should Buy These Solar Post Cap Lights?
These are a good fit if you have an existing fence or deck with exposed post tops and you want them to look finished and warm at night without touching an electrical panel. The 8-pack makes sense if you have four or more posts to cover. Skip these if your posts are mostly shaded since the solar panels need consistent direct sun to hit the full runtime, and skip them if you need any functional lighting for steps or paths since 5 to 10 lumens is purely decorative. If you’re already looking at other outdoor patio lighting options like string lights or pathway stakes, these work well alongside those rather than instead of them.
How Do You Install Solar Post Cap Lights?
You have two options. You can simply set them on top of any flat surface and they will stay put on their own, which is what I did in the video. Or you can screw them directly into your fence posts for a permanent mount, which is what I did after filming. Either way it’s easy. The adapter bases handle both 3.5×3.5 wooden posts and 4×4 vinyl posts, and the whole process is a screwdriver job with nothing complicated about it.
Features That Actually Matter for Outdoor Use
- Convincing flame effect at night: The flicker varies in speed and intensity rather than pulsing at a fixed rate. Up close in daylight it’s clearly a light, but at night from across the deck it reads as a warm glow on each post.
- Fully automatic operation: The built-in light sensor handles everything. They come on at dusk and go off at dawn. I haven’t adjusted a timer or flipped a switch since I put them up.
- Replaceable batteries: The NiMH AA batteries will degrade over time with daily cycling. Being able to swap them without replacing the whole unit matters when you have eight of them.
- Adapter base system: The box includes inserts for both wooden and vinyl post sizes so the cap seats snugly rather than wobbling.
Pros
- Flame effect looks warm and convincing from a distance at night
- Automatic dusk-to-dawn operation, zero maintenance once installed
- Fits both wooden and vinyl post sizes with included adapters
- Can be screwed in permanently or just set in place
- Black housing looks clean and intentional during daylight
- Batteries are replaceable so the units can outlast the original cells
- No wiring and no electricity cost
Cons
- Purely decorative brightness, not enough light for a path or step
- Runtime drops during cloudy stretches or low-sun winter months
- Posts in significant shade will underperform on charging
- Up close in daylight the LED is visible, the effect is best appreciated at night from a distance
Common Questions About Solar Post Cap Lights
Will these fit a standard 4×4 fence post?
Yes with a sizing note. A nominal 4×4 wooden post actually measures 3.5×3.5 inches. These fit that actual dimension. True 4×4 vinyl posts are also supported via the included adapter bases.
How long do they stay on at night?
On a full sunny-day charge expect 8 to 11 hours. Runtime drops during overcast stretches and will be lower in winter climates with short daylight hours.
Are they bright enough to light a walkway or steps?
No. These output 5 to 10 lumens in flame mode which is soft and atmospheric. For safety lighting on steps or paths you would need a separate product alongside these.
Do you have to screw them in or can you just set them on top?
Both work. You can set them anywhere flat or screw them into fence posts for a permanent mount. Either way installation is simple.
Can you replace the batteries when they wear out?
Yes. Each unit takes one standard NiMH AA rechargeable battery and the housing opens to access it. Plan on replacing them after extended daily use to keep the units running long term.
What Are the Best Alternatives to Fuligent?
I’ve only run the Fuligent set myself, so the two below are described from their listings. Both link to Amazon.
| Model | Best for | Trade-off vs Fuligent |
|---|---|---|
| Fuligent 8-pack (reviewed) | Flame-effect ambiance, fits wooden and vinyl posts | 5 to 10 lumens, decorative only |
| ONLSITY 8-pack | A step up in brightness at 25 lumens, warm white | Steady warm white, so the flame effect is gone |
| EXCMARK 8-pack | Switchable warm white or cool white, in an 8-pack | Loses the flame effect, and on cool white it reads as a plain porch light rather than ambiance |
I filmed a second video after I put all eight up. They’re screwed into the tops of the fence posts and I did it by myself. Once it gets dark they just come on, and the camera distorts the flicker a little, so they look better in person than they do here.
My Take After Running Them Every Night
They come on every night without me doing anything and the flame effect looks good from the deck. That’s really all I needed them to do. If you want your fence posts to look warm and finished after dark without running wire or paying an electrician, these are an easy call.
