I’m a data person. A plain number on a scale was never going to be enough for me, so when the RunStar Smart Body Fat Scale landed on my doorstep to try, I was already curious. This was gifted to me by the brand for testing.
If you like charts and trends and digging into details, this one is kind of addicting. If you just want your weight and nothing else, it’s going to feel like a lot.
Quick Verdict
- Buy it if: you want more than just a number and you’ll actually use the app
- Skip it if: you only care about weight and charts sound like overkill
- My favorite feature: the trend charts in the app. Seeing patterns over a week, month, and year is exactly what I wanted.
- Would I buy again? Yes
What the RunStar Smart Body Fat Scale Tracks and Why It Matters
This scale goes well past weight. It tracks 22 body composition metrics including BMI, body fat percentage, muscle mass, visceral fat, water content, and heart rate, all visible in the app with charts by week, month, and year. Setup took me about two minutes, the display is large and easy to read, and it still shows your weight on the screen even when the app is closed. If you’re a data person, you’ll have a lot to work with here.

Who Should Buy a Smart Body Composition Scale
This is for you if you like tracking progress beyond weight and you want to see those trends over time. It’s also a good fit if multiple people in your house want to share one scale, since it supports up to 24 user profiles.

First Impressions Out of the Box
The size and screen stood out right away. It looks sharp and I had no problem leaving it out in my bathroom. Setup was fast. I added myself as a user, turned on Bluetooth, and stepped on. Start to finish it took about two minutes.
RunStar Scale Features That Data People Will Actually Use
- 22 metrics: Weight, BMI, body fat percentage, heart rate, muscle mass, water content, visceral fat, and more. If you like details, you’ll have plenty to dig into.
- Trend charts: The app shows your data by week, month, and year. This is the part I keep going back to because it makes patterns easy to spot.
- Multiple users: Supports up to 24 profiles so the whole house can use it. I added my husband right away.
- Special modes: The app includes pregnancy mode, child mode, and baby mode, which makes it more versatile for different households.
- Works without the app open: I stepped on it with the app closed and my weight still showed on the screen. It functions like a normal scale when you’re not in the mood to check your phone.
- Apple Health sync: Connected to my Apple Health with no issues, which was the integration I cared most about.
How Accurate Is the RunStar (Starfit) Smart Scale?
In my testing, the RunStar’s weight readings lined up with what I expected, and I read the body fat numbers as trends rather than exact figures. The scale measures body composition with BIA, a small electrical current through your body, and Houston Methodist says hydration is the main thing that throws these scales off. If you’re low on water, the body fat number tends to come out high. Their advice boils down to weighing in at the same time every day, and not right after coffee, a drink or a workout.
I noticed small changes when I stepped on a few times back to back, which is normal since your weight shifts throughout the day. There’s a lot of data to look at and I’m still learning what some of the metrics mean, but it’s all there and easy to track over time.

Pros
- Tracks 22 metrics including body fat, BMI, muscle mass, and heart rate
- Setup took about two minutes
- Large, easy-to-read display
- App trend charts make it easy to see patterns over time
- Supports up to 24 user profiles
- Still shows weight on screen without opening the app
- Syncs with Apple Health, Fitbit, and Health Connect
- Super motivating because now I want to improve all these numbers
Cons
- Requires 4 AAA batteries, so keep a pack on hand
- Some metrics aren’t self-explanatory and you may need to look a few up
- Body composition numbers are estimates based on BIA, not lab-level accuracy
Common Questions About the RunStar Body Fat Scale
How accurate are the body fat and body composition numbers?
They’re estimates. The RunStar uses BIA, and hydration shifts the reading, so weigh in at the same time each day and watch the trend over weeks. For lab-level accuracy you’d need professional testing.
How many users does it support?
Up to 24 user profiles, which makes it a good fit for families.
Do I need my phone open every time I weigh in?
No. The scale displays your weight on screen even with the app closed.
Does it sync with Apple Health or Fitbit?
Yes. It connects to the Starfit app and integrates with Apple Health, Fitbit, and Health Connect.
Does it have pregnancy or child modes?
Yes. The app includes pregnancy mode, child mode, and baby mode.
Similar Options to Compare
I only used the RunStar, so these three come from the listings rather than from my own testing. Each one answers a different reason this scale might not be your pick.
| Option | Why you’d pick it instead |
|---|---|
| WITHINGS Body Smart | Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth, so a reading uploads with no phone in the room. Reads to within 50 g against the RunStar’s 0.1 lb, takes a heart rate at every weigh-in, and shows trends on a color display. The listing says it was developed with hospitals and clinically validated. This is the medical end of the category. |
| Etekcity Upgraded Smart Scale | FSA and HSA eligible, so it can come out of pre-tax dollars. Nine fewer metrics at 13, but a switch on the back runs it with no phone and no app at all, with your details entered on the scale itself. Syncs to Apple Health, Fitbit, Google Fit, Samsung Health and MyFitnessPal. |
| RENPHO Smart Scale Elis 2XL | An 11.8 inch square platform and a 500 lb capacity rather than the RunStar’s 400. Shows seven values on the scale itself, keeps readings on a built-in chip, and has baby and athlete modes. Pick it if a standard platform feels small underfoot. |
My Take After Using It
I like it a lot. The charts and the volume of data are exactly what I was looking for, and setup was so easy there was no excuse not to use it. If you’re a data person who wants more than a number, this one is going to scratch that itch. I would buy it again.
Watching those small weekly changes stack up is the same idea I dug into over on my other blog, in small daily actions that compound over time.
