Oh my gosh, hot chocolate before bed sounds so good! SWITCH Killswitch is a sugar-free hot cocoa with magnesium glycinate, fermented L-theanine, GABA, and tart cherry in it, and no synthetic melatonin. You drink it 30 to 60 minutes before bed. It’s now one of the drinks I rotate through at night, some nights and not every night, and it tastes like hot chocolate, which is the whole reason it made the rotation.
SWITCH sent it to me to try. The branding pulled me in before I’d read a single ingredient, so I’ll say that up front too.
Quick Verdict
- Buy it if: you like a warm drink before bed, you’ve cut sugar, and you’d rather sip your magnesium than swallow it
- Skip it if: you don’t like chocolate, since that’s the only flavor, or you want a melatonin product
- My favorite feature: It tastes like hot chocolate, and the aftertaste is chocolate too
- Would I buy again? Yes, for the rotation
Why a sleep supplement that’s also hot chocolate got my attention
I love a soothing warm drink before bed. If I could drink hot chocolate at night, yes please. The catch is that I don’t drink sugary dairy hot chocolate anymore, and I’d really been missing it. A sugar-free cocoa with a sleep formula in it is a treat and a supplement in the same mug, and that’s a combination I didn’t need much convincing on.
The canister says it relaxes your mind and body, gives you restorative sleep, and you wake up refreshed. I can’t say how it’s going to make anybody feel, because everybody’s so different. What I can tell you is how it tastes and how it fits into my nights.

Who is Killswitch sleep cocoa for?
People who already have a warm-drink-before-bed habit and want the drink to do a little more. People who gave up sugar and miss hot chocolate. Tea drinkers who’d like a switch-up some nights. If you take a magnesium powder already, this is the same idea with cocoa instead of berry.
It’s not the only thing in my nighttime lineup. The Som Sleep calm berry powder is the berry one in the same rotation, and the Hiihone lemon balm tea is the caffeine-free tea I’ve written up for the same job. Killswitch is the one I reach for when I want a treat.

How it tastes, and the stevia question
Before this I was drinking tea every night before bed, and chocolate is a nice little switch-up. It smells so good going in, and it tastes really good. Whenever I see stevia on a label I get a little nervous about the aftertaste. I’m not getting that from this. The aftertaste is chocolate.
I kept forgetting to record myself making it at night, because when I’m ready to wind down, I’m ready to wind down. So the video is an afternoon cup, and I chilled out a little bit in the afternoon instead. Nobody complained.

Making a cup of Killswitch
- The seal peels off cleanly: a small thing I appreciated on the first open. No fighting it.
- One scoop, hot water: the scooper is in the canister. You can use your milk of choice, and I’m fine with water.
- Whisk it: I use a little frother because it’s more fun than a spoon. Mine needs a battery change, which you can see in the video. A spoon works too.
What I liked
- The branding is fun, and I’m not above being sold by a purple canister
- It’s a sweet treat at night with no sugar in it
- The ingredient list is short enough to read off the side in one breath
What to know before you buy
- I put in too much water the first time and it came out thinner than I’d like. That’s my fault, not the powder’s. A little less water gives you a richer cup
- I rotate my nighttime supplements and don’t take the same thing every night. This is one option in that rotation, not a routine I replaced
- It’s real cocoa, so there’s a hint of caffeine in it. I haven’t noticed it, and you might
- Chocolate is the only flavor
Common questions about Killswitch sleep cocoa
Does Killswitch have melatonin in it?
No synthetic melatonin. The sleep side of the formula is magnesium glycinate, fermented L-theanine, GABA, and tart cherry extract. If melatonin leaves you foggy, that’s the reason to look at this one.
Does the Killswitch hot cocoa taste like a supplement?
No. It tastes like hot chocolate, and the aftertaste is chocolate. That’s the whole test for a supplement powder, and it passed.
Does it have caffeine?
A hint, from the cacao. It’s real cocoa bean powder, so it carries what cocoa carries. I haven’t noticed it, but if you’re very sensitive, know it’s there.
Can you make it with milk instead of water?
Yes. The directions say warm milk or water. I use water and I’m fine with it. I keep meaning to try coconut milk when the weather cools off.
Does Killswitch actually help you sleep?
I can’t tell you that for anyone but me, and everybody’s so different. I like the way it makes me feel, and it’s one of the drinks I rotate through before bed, not something I take every night.
Other bedtime powders to compare
- BEAM Dream Melatonin-Free Sleep Powder, Cinnamon Cocoa: the closest match, a melatonin-free cocoa that adds reishi mushroom and apigenin to the magnesium, GABA, and L-theanine.
- Moon Juice Magnesi-Om Magnesium Powder: berry flavored and no cocoa, with three forms of magnesium plus L-theanine, meant to be stirred into water.
- Natural Vitality Calm Magnesium Powder: a plain magnesium citrate drink at 325 mg per serving, no sleep blend, if magnesium is all you’re after.
My verdict on the Killswitch sleep hot cocoa
I like the way it makes me feel, and I’m going to continue to use it. It’s an excellent wind-down drink, and I’m extra excited to have it for fall and winter. Sugar-free hot chocolate before bed is a nice little treat, and I’d forgotten how much I missed it.
