A burst of berry, and very tasty. That was my first sip of Som Sleep, and the two things I noticed right behind it were that it mixes in fast and it kicks in fast. Som Sleep sent it over for me to try, and it’s earned a spot in the rotation.
Rotation is the word on purpose. My nighttime supplements are a small pile of pills, magnesium, L-theanine, sometimes GABA, and I like to switch things up instead of taking the same thing every night. I don’t take melatonin nightly either. So this isn’t a replacement for the capsules. It’s the nice option for once in a while.
Quick Verdict
- Buy it if: You like having a sleep option that tastes good for the occasional night, and you’d rather not add another bottle of capsules to the shelf.
- Skip it if: You’re sensitive to melatonin, or you want to know exactly how much of each ingredient you’re getting.
- My favorite feature: The flavor. It tastes like a treat, not a supplement.
- Would I buy again? Yes
Why does a drink make a nice change from capsules?
On the nights I use it, mixing a glass of something 30 minutes before bed turns out to be a cue. Stick pack, cold water, a quick stir, and my brain gets the message that I’m done for the night. A capsule doesn’t always do that. You swallow it and keep scrolling. If you want the rest of the shut-down ritual around that cue, my evening wind-down routine is over on Seeding Serendipity.
The other thing it does is put five ingredients in one stick. Melatonin, magnesium, B6, L-theanine, and GABA, together. On a night when I don’t feel like deciding which bottles to open, that’s the appeal. On the other nights, the bottles are still there.

Who is Som Sleep Calm best for?
Anyone who already takes something for sleep and wants an easy option to swap in now and then. If you’re on a magnesium and L-theanine already, this is that plus melatonin in a single stick for the occasional night. It’s also for people who can’t stand swallowing capsules, which is a bigger group than the supplement aisle admits.
It’s not for anyone who wants to avoid melatonin. For that, the melatonin-free sleep gummies I reviewed are the closer fit. And if you have a diagnosed sleep problem, a drink mix is a nice ritual, not a treatment.

How has it gone on the nights I use it?
Cold water, about twenty seconds with a spoon, and it’s gone. Nothing floats, nothing settles at the bottom of the glass, and the drink stays clear. A fruit-flavored drink doesn’t have to be neon pink, and I was glad to see it.
I sleep well on the nights I use it, and I wake up with a clear head, which hasn’t been true of every melatonin product I’ve tried. Whether that’s the whole blend working or mostly the magnesium and theanine I already respond to, I can’t separate. What I can say is that there’s no fog the next morning.

Three details that made it easy to keep using
- Single-serve sticks: Ten to a pouch, and they keep. For something you reach for once in a while, that beats a tub going stale.
- Zero sugar: It’s sweetened with erythritol, monk fruit, and stevia, and it’s sweet enough without tasting like medicine. Ten calories a stick.
- A modest melatonin dose: 3mg per stick. That’s on the lower end of what’s sold, and it’s the number I’d want to see on a nightly product.
What I liked about Som Sleep
- Tastes like a treat, not a chore
- Five ingredients in one stick for the nights I don’t want to think
- Vegan and gluten-free on the label
- Dairy-free and soy-free as well, per the label
What to know before buying Som Sleep Calm
- Only the melatonin has a number on the label. The magnesium, B6, L-theanine, and GABA amounts aren’t listed, so if you dose those on purpose, you can’t here.
- If you’re sensitive to melatonin, 3mg may still be a lot for you. Start with half a stick.
Som Sleep Calm questions answered
Will Som Sleep make me groggy in the morning?
It hasn’t for me. I wake up clear on the nights I use it, which is more than I can say for some higher-dose melatonin products. If you know you’re sensitive to melatonin, start with half a stick.
When should I drink it?
About 30 minutes before you want to be asleep. Mix one stick into 4 to 8 oz of water, cold or warm. I use cold.
Does the powder dissolve or leave sediment?
It dissolves. Twenty seconds with a spoon and the glass is clear, with nothing settled at the bottom.
Is it safe to take every night?
I don’t use it every night, and that’s a choice, not a rule. I like to rotate what I take, and I don’t want melatonin nightly. It’s drug-free and non-habit forming, and if you’re weighing nightly melatonin, that’s a question for your doctor.
Is there a version without melatonin?
Not from Som. If you want the magnesium and GABA without melatonin, the Natrol gummies in the comparison list leave it out.
Other sleep supplements to compare
- OLLY Sleep Gummies: Same 3mg of melatonin with L-theanine, chamomile, and lemon balm, in a chewable blackberry gummy. Two gummies 30 minutes before bed, 60 to a bottle. It’s made with sugar and gelatin, so it isn’t vegan or sugar-free. For anyone who’d rather chew than mix.
- BEAM Dream Sleep Powder: The warm-drink version. A hot cocoa style mix with magnesium, L-theanine, melatonin, reishi, and apigenin, vegan with no added sugar, 30 servings to a tub, in dessert flavors like cinnamon cocoa and sea salt caramel. For a bedtime mug instead of a cold glass.
- Natrol Sleep and Restore Melatonin-Free Gummies: No melatonin at all. Cherry gummies with 100mg of a magnesium glycinate blend, 100mg GABA, and 10mg B6, with every amount printed on the label. Two a night, 20 to 30 minutes before bed. Contains sugar.
My take on Som Sleep Powder
I went in doubting a drink mix could do anything my bottles weren’t already doing, and I was half right. The ingredients aren’t new to me. The ritual is, and it’s a nice one to have in the drawer for the nights I want it.
If you want a good-tasting sleep option to rotate in now and then, and you’re fine with melatonin on those nights, Som Sleep Calm is an easy yes. If you’d rather leave melatonin out entirely, the comparison list has the closer fit.
