Hermon medicated shampoo was sent to me to try. It came out of the pump chalky and milky, and my first thought was, am I going to like this? I do. I’ve been using it for a while now, whenever I need it, and I like everything about it.
Judging a shampoo by its color is apparently a thing I do.
Quick Verdict
- Buy it if: you only need it now and then and want it to act like a regular shampoo
- Skip it if: you want fragrance-free. This one’s scented
- My favorite feature: a three-way tie between the soothing no-tingle feel, the smell and how easy my hair is to brush after
- Would I buy again? Yes
What’s in Hermon medicated shampoo?
Two active ingredients do the medicated part. Zinc pyrithione 1.5% goes after scalp fungus, and salicylic acid 1.8% exfoliates dead skin and flakes.
The rest of the formula is plant extracts, cica and aloe vera among them. The bottle also lists dandruff, itching, redness and the appearance of thinning.

Who is this medicated shampoo for?
It’s a good fit if you get flare-ups a few times a year, like I do, and want a bottle on hand for those weeks. Two others I’ve tried for the same job are the RoyceDerm coal tar shampoo and the Wild Naturals eczema shampoo.
I don’t have dandruff or psoriasis, so I can’t tell you what it does for either. Skin in rough shape is a question for a doctor.

Does Hermon medicated shampoo lather?
Yes. It lathers up really nice, which I wouldn’t have guessed from the thick, off-white blob sitting in my palm.
Add water and it turns into a real lather. It feels good going on.

Does this shampoo tingle or smell medicated?
- Tingle: none. There’s no overwhelming tingling feeling. It just feels nice and soothing.
- Scent: it smells good. To me it doesn’t smell medicated at all.
- Brushing: my hair is easy to brush afterward.
Two small things I like about the bottle
- It’s clearly labeled. You know exactly what it is.
- It has a pump instead of a cap.
What to know before you order
- Don’t let the first squirt put you off. It behaves like any other shampoo after that.
- I didn’t track results, so I don’t have numbers for you.
