HABIT ONE sent me their magnesium cocoa to try, and I was so excited to try it out.
It’s a cocoa with adaptogens and vitamins mixed in to help you wind down before bed, and it turned out really tasty.
Quick Verdict
- Buy it if: you want a warm mug before bed that does more than taste good
- Skip it if: you want a mild, simple flavor
- My favorite feature: The flavor
- Would I buy again? Yes

What’s in HABIT ONE mushroom cocoa?
It’s cacao with reishi, L-theanine, ashwagandha, magnesium glycinate, L-glycine, chamomile, jujube, zinc and cinnamon added, sweetened with monk fruit. The back of the bag splits them into two groups, a nootropic stack and a relaxation and recovery stack.
There’s no melatonin in it. It’s a cup of cocoa first, and the calming ingredients come along with it.

Who is this magnesium cocoa for?
Anyone who already takes a few of these at night. A bunch of them are part of my evening routine, so having them in a warm drink felt like an easy swap. If tea is more your thing, the Leckar sleep aid tea is another cup I like before bed. And if you’d rather skip the supplements altogether, the organic rooibos from My Red Tea is a caffeine-free cup with nothing extra in it.
And anyone who loves hot chocolate once it gets cold out. There’s just something about it in winter. For a different take, the SWITCH Killswitch sleep cocoa is in my bedtime rotation too.
What does HABIT ONE cocoa taste like?
Ooh, it smelled amazing. The first sip was quite cinnamony, almost spicy, and then the chocolate shows up right behind it.
The more sips I took, the more I liked it. After that I brushed my teeth, washed my face and went to bed, and I slept well.

Making a cup at night
- One tablespoon: That’s a single serving, and the bag holds 30.
- Half a cup of hot water: I went with water for my first cup.
- A mini frother: I mixed mine with a little handheld frother. A spoon looked like it would do fine, but the frother gets it really smooth.
A few little extras
- A timeline on the back of the bag that runs from week one to month four
- Packets for one cup are an option too
- The sleepy character in a robe on the front, holding its own mug
Two things to know before you buy
- It leans hard on cinnamon. I ended up loving it, but if you want plain cocoa, this may not be your cup.
- Check with your doctor if you take medication. It’s a supplement, so run it by them first.
Questions about HABIT ONE mushroom cocoa
Can I make it with milk instead of water?
Yes, the directions on the bag give you the choice of water or milk. I’ve only made it with water so far.
Does it have sugar in it?
There’s no added sugar. Monk fruit sweetens it, and a scoop is 10 calories.
Is it okay to have a cup every day?
Ashwagandha is the ingredient to think about. Studies of ashwagandha extracts found no safety problems for up to about three months, and there isn’t enough research yet to say about longer use. Skip it if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or have surgery coming up.
Does HABIT ONE cocoa have melatonin in it?
No. Melatonin isn’t on the label. The wind-down side comes from ingredients like reishi, L-theanine, ashwagandha and magnesium glycinate.
How much powder goes in one cup?
One tablespoon is a serving, and the bag holds 30. I stirred mine into half a cup of hot water with a little handheld frother.
